Abstract
The oscillating electromagnetic field of an intense laser pulse can si gnificantly affect the emission properties of ions in a plasma. For su fficiently intense laser fields, induced second order processes produc e discrete radiative transitions. In addition, these induced radiative processes alter the level population kinetics, and the spectrum of sp ontaneous transitions. We discuss the effects of these processes on th e n = 2-1 spectrum of He-like ions, as well as implications for some x -ray laser schemes pumped by intense, short-pulse lasers.
