Wound care after cutaneous surgery can play an integral role in wound
healing. This article reviews wound healing physiology and the roles o
f topical agents, such as antiseptics and topical ointments, and the n
umerous occlusive dressings presently available in postsurgical wound
care. The use of prophylactic antibiotics in preventing wound infectio
ns and endocarditis is discussed in the setting of cutaneous surgery.
General wound care guidelines are also provided.
