Abstract
The relative significance of the active optical guiding and the gain g uiding is identified at arbitrary pump strengths. The optical guiding is observed to be turned on gradually as the pump strength increases. Power laws are found for the eigenmode radii. (C) 1998 American Instit ute of Physics.
