Da. Parsons et al., INCOMPLETE URETHRAL OBSTRUCTION ASSOCIATED WITH DILATATION OF THE URETHRA, CYSTITIS, AND PYELONEPHRITIS IN A VIETNAMESE POTBELLIED PIG, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 212(2), 1998, pp. 262
A 2-year-old castrated male Vietnamese pot-bellied pig examined becaus
e of stranguria was found to have severe dilatation and inflammation o
f the pelvic portion of the urethra accompanied by cystitis and pyelon
ephritis. The pig had apparently had chronic inflammation of the urina
ry tract that eventually progressed to incomplete obstruction of the u
rethra. However, the initial cause of the urinary tract inflammation c
ould not be determined. Possible causes included chronic bacterial inf
ection, traumatic injury during urethral catheterization, and injury t
o the urethral mucosa secondary to extreme acidification of the urine.
