A new PVC membrane electrode based on the bis(benzoin)-semiethylenedia
mine (BBSEA) complex of HS(II) is described which exhibits excellent s
electivity towards iodide, related to the unique interaction between t
he central Hg(II) and the iodide ion. The electrode has a linear respo
nse to iodide from 5 x 10(-7) to 5 x 10(-4) mol/L with a slope of 58 m
V/dec.(20 degrees C). The response characteristics were investigated i
n detail and the mechanism of the electrode was studied with AC impeda
nce and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) techniques. It can be used f
or iodide determinations in drug preparations.
