Abstract
The reaction of 2, 3-dimethylphenol with [Fe(DMF)(3)Cl-2] [FeCl4] comp lex in different molar ratios yields diarylmethanes, 4-(2'-hydroxy-3', 4'-dimethylbenzyl)-2, 3-dimethylphenol 2, 6-(2'-hydroxy-3', 4'-dimeth ylbenzyl)-2, 3-dimethylphenol 4 and 4-(4'-hydroxy-2', 3'-dimethylbenzy l)-2, 3-dimethylphenol 5 in addition to 4, 4'-dihydroxy-2, 2', 3.3'-te tramethylbiphenyl 3 and their polymeric products. The dimeric products have been characterized by IR, MS and H-1 NMR spectra.
