Under consideration is the stress field arising in a plastically defor
med polycrystal since its misoriented grains are subjected to differen
t plastic strains. To analyse that, a two-dimensional model has been t
aken that allows for intergranular stress sources and comprises a fini
te aggregate of the grains together with its continuous surroundings o
f mean polycrystal properties. Within the scope of this model the stre
ss field is analytically evaluated for three adjoined grains, special
attention being given to the singularity at the triple junction line.
Related features of the shear and hydrostatic stress components are re
spectively considered to actuate the low-angle boundary emission and t
he conglomeration of point defects. (C) 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
