Abstract
This report describes an unusual reaction to injected subconjunctival corticosteroid. The authors examined a patient with large areas of con junctival necrosis at the site of a previous subconjunctival corticost eroid injection. A Gram's stain and culture of the affected conjunctiv al area and the bottled corticosteroid suspension were negative. Necro sis of the conjunctiva is a heretofore unreported adverse reaction to a subconjunctival corticosteroid injection. These lesions probably rep resent a localized toxic reaction rather than a sequela of infection. Conjunctival necrosis has been known to occur following various microb ial infections, chemical burns, and certain topical and subconjunctiva l antibiotics. We describe an interesting and unusual case of conjunct ival necrosis following the administration of subconjunctival corticos teroid.
