The fractions Theta(beta) and Theta(X) of spin-correlated singlet radi
cal-ion pairs in alkane solutions irradiated by P-particles and X-rays
were got from experiments on magnetic held effect and quantum beats i
n recombination fluorescence. The ratio Theta(beta)/Theta(X) values of
1.3-2.8 for the solvent series studied were found both from magnetic
effect and quantum beats. The Monte Carlo calculations were made to ex
plain the variations of Theta(beta)/Theta(X) in different solvents. Th
e high value of Theta(beta)/Theta(X) = 2.8 for isooctane is probably d
ue both to large separation between ions in pair and to high concentra
tion of neutral radical in the spur. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Sc
