This paper presents results of the hierarchical modelling of flexible
assembly systems (FAS) control with object-oriented Petri nets (OPN).
Control approaches using coordination architecture, and tools to perfo
rm them are outlined. The paper discusses the hierarchical decompositi
on of assembly systems for products families using a generic and polym
orphic object approach and the reuse of these object libraries to perf
orm step by step the final system model, The use of objects and Petri
net subsystems with more or less autonomy for subsystem behaviour mode
lling provides a new way of manufacturing systems modelling in a CIM a
rchitecture, and for assembly systems in particular.
