During the past several years technological advances have led to the d
evelopment of small diameter endoscopes (minilaparoscopes) which facil
itate the performance of laparoscopy under local anesthesia. Minilapar
oscopy promises many advantages and less complications. Today, indicat
ions of minilaparoscopy are mainly diagnostic and minimal intervention
s but technological development and clinical studies might reveal it a
s a substitute for conventional laparoscopy. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
