A purified 41-kDa protein of the rodent filaria Acanthocheilonema vite
ae was shown to protect jirds against a challenge infection. Subcutane
ous immunization with the protein reduced the number of adult worms by
up to 65% and the number of circulating microfilariae declined by up
to 93% in these animals. The protein is located in the muscle tissues
of adult worms and was identified as tropomyosin by N-terminal sequenc
ing of the purified protein.
