The characteristics of a beam generated by a ''hollow cathode'' gun, i
ntended for electron cooling purposes, are thoroughly investigated. At
tention was focused on the details of the current density and temperat
ure distributions across the electron beam. Consequently a high qualit
y beam was obtained, comparable with the beams generated by standard g
uns. Much insight was gained on the vacuum and alignment conditions fo
r this new configuration. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
