Wd. Nowak et al., ON A POSSIBILITY TO DETERMINE THE SIGN OF THE POLARIZED GLUON DISTRIBUTION, Nuovo cimento della Società Italiana di Fisica. A. Nuclei, particles and fields, 110(7), 1997, pp. 757-766
We investigate the possibility to draw conclusions on the sign of the
spin-dependent gluon distribution, Delta G(x, Q(2)), from existing pol
arized DIS data. The spin-dependent parton distributions Delta u(v), D
elta d(v), Delta (u) over bar, Delta (d) over bar, Delta s, and Delta(
G) are constructed in the framework of a phenomenological procedure ut
ilizing some assumptions on signs of valence and sea parton distributi
ons and taking into account the axial gluon anomaly. Results on integr
al quark contributions to the proton spin, Delta (u) over tilde, Delta
(d) over tilde, and Delta (s) over tilde, are used as input. Our pred
ictions for x- and Q(2)-dependencies of the polarized proton and neutr
on structure functions, g(1)(p) and g(1)(n), are compared to experimen
tal data. It is shown that the neutron structure function, g(1)(n), is
especially sensitive to the sign of Delta G(x, Q(2)). The result of o
ur analysis strongly supports the conclusion that this sign should be
positive.
