The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of atmospheric temperature and th
e tendencies of its evolution are analyzed in the context of a three-d
imensional climate model developed by the Institute of Atmospheric Phy
sics, Russian Academy of Sciences (IFA RAS). An analytic study of the
equations of heat content in tropospheric and stratospheric integral l
ayers has shown that the temperature QBO can be generated through the
mechanism of parametric resonance in the atmosphere. In this case, the
characteristics of the QBO depend heavily on stratospheric parameters
. Under the present-day climatic conditions, the QBO of atmospheric te
mperature manifests itself mainly over continents. With a doubled cont
ent of atmospheric carbon dioxide, the temperature QBO disappears for
most regions. These tendencies are in qualitative agreement with empir
ical tropospheric data.
