In the nondivergent barotropic approximation, a moment model is constr
ucted for the dynamics of an elliptic vortex patch in a background flo
w with a uniform potential vorticity over a marine trench or ridge of
rectangular section. With Green's function constructed, explicit expre
ssions are obtained for the velocity of the vortex center and the rate
of shear strain induced by bottom breaks. Integrals of dynamic equati
ons are found and possible stationary states of the vortex are studied
depending on the center location, parameters of the ellipse, and dept
h difference.
