A canal automation algorithm named CLIS has been further developed and
evaluated using test cases set by the ASCE Task Committee on Canal Au
tomation Algorithms. The control algorithm is based on an inverse solu
tion method of the Saint Venant equations. It is designed for the auto
mation of demand oriented systems, and is able to take into account bo
th scheduled and unscheduled changes in offtake discharge. A target wa
ter level is maintained at the downstream end of each pool by measurin
g two water levels in each pool, one at its upstream end and the other
at its downstream end. No flow rates need to be measured. According t
o the specifications of the ASCE task: committee, it has been tested f
or a steep and a flat canal, under tuned and untuned conditions. The r
esults indicate that the proposed central algorithm is rather effectiv
e and robust.
