The process of three-photon down-conversion 3 omega --> omega + omega
+ omega in an optical cavity is analyzed theoretically. A classical fe
ature uf this system is a first-order transition of the fundamental mo
de above a threshold 3 omega pump power. We calculate the properties o
f the intra-and extracavity states using analytical calculations and q
uantum trajectory simulations. A positive, non-Gaussian Wigner functio
n exhibiting a threefold symmetric is found. Above threshold the Wigne
r function displays separate peaks among which tunneling occurs.
