Abstract
The study presents a theoretical derivation for a new pickup probabili
ty formulation for sediment transport. Sand particles are assumed to b
e subjected to a hydraulically rough flow. The derived equation compar
es well with the experimental data found in published literature. Usin
g the proposed relation, the Shields criterion for the definition of t
he threshold condition for sediment transport is equivalent to 0.6% of
the pickup probability.
