Medical treatment of systemic idiopathic fibrosis is first based on st
eroid therapy, of which efficacy is well known for nearly 75% of cases
of retroperitoneal fibrosis, but less certain for the other localisat
ions of the disease. Studies on the immune-pathological mechanism of s
ystemic fibrosis have led to immunosuppressive drug use, such as azath
ioprin, cyclophosphamide and methotrexate. Tamoxifen has been tried be
cause of its efficacy on desmoid turners and seems to be of great inte
rest. Attention is focused on fibrosing cervicitis which may also be t
reated with immunosuppressive drugs.
