Jm. Provenzale et al., DURAL SINUS THROMBOSIS ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVATED PROTEIN-C RESISTANCE- MR-IMAGING FINDINGS AND PROBAND IDENTIFICATION, American journal of roentgenology, 170(2), 1998, pp. 499-502
OBJECTIVE, The purpose of this study was to report the association of
dural sinus thrombosis with a hypercoagulable state associated with ac
tivated protein C resistance. CONCLUSION. In our small study populatio
n, hemorrhagic venous infarction was common (three of four patients) a
mong patients with dural sinus thrombosis and activated protein C resi
stance. Four of five patients with dural sinus thrombosis had positive
tests for activated protein C resistance. This finding, in conjunctio
n with data from other studies, suggests that patients with dural sinu
s thrombosis may need to be studied for the presence of activated prot
ein C resistance. A positive finding for activated protein C resistanc
e can be important not only in helping to explain the cause of thrombo
sis in affected individuals but also in identifying families at risk f
or thrombosis.
