Wear of the articulating surfaces of mating components of total hip en
doprostheses is the most important technical factor limiting the funct
ional lifetime of the prosthesis. Biolox(R) ceramic femoral heads have
been used successfully throughout the world for more than 20 years. I
n vitro tests and clinical results show that the artificial modular hi
p joint system employing a Caproman(R) stem and a ball made of Biolox(
R) or Biolox(R)-forte is resistant to mechanical failure. The threshol
d values for burst load and cyclic load prescribed by the FDA are achi
eved or bettered. Clinical results support those of the in vitro tests
. The femoral head made of Biolox(R) or Biolox(R)-forte used in combin
ation with cups and stems made of Caproman(R) thus complies with the r
equired standards.
