The safety and efficacy of immunizing HIV-infected persons for other d
iseases has been controversial. Transient increases in HIV viral load
have been reported in some but not all studies of immunization, and ar
e unlikely to have adverse clinical consequences, particularly in the
era of more active antiretroviral therapy. Although the serological re
sponse to immunization is reduced in the HIV-infected host, recent dat
a suggest that it has some clinical efficacy. (C) 1998 Rapid Science L
