Abstract
Expression of E-cadherin (E-cad) and beta-catenin (beta-cat) was inves tigated immunohistologically in 91 cases of excised hepatocellular car cinomas. Immunodectection was altered in 56% of tumours for E-cad and in 30.8% for beta-cat. Downregulation of E-cad and beta-cat correlated with the size of tumours, and high nuclear grade, but only E-cad alte ration correlated with the mitotic index. Alterations of E-cad and bet a-cat expression correlated with survival. Although E-cad and beta-cat immunodetections were independent prognostic factors, their prognosti c value was lower than that of current clinicopathological parameters.
