Two independent random samples of the free-living male population of T
al(in aged 30-54 years were examined by standard epidemiological metho
ds within an interval of 10 years. The number of participants was 1890
at the first survey and 751 at the second. Nutrition data were obtain
ed by means of 24-hour recall method from 706 and 271 man, respectivel
y, and consumption of 43 nutrients was analyzed. Positive trends in sy
stolic and diastolic blood pressures, body mass Index and triglyceride
s mean values, In prevalence of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hy
pertriglyceridemia, and negative changes in prevalence of smoking ware
accompanied by favorable changes in the consumption of main nutrients
. Changes in consumption of coffee and micronutrients were unfavorable
. The changes in P/S ratio, energy, coffee intake accounted for trends
in serum cholesterol; the changes in PI'S ratio, saccharose, energy i
ntake accounted for trends In body mass index; the changes of body mas
s index and alcohol consumption accounted for trends in blood pressure
. it was impossible to separate the direct effect of nutrients on trig
lycerides level from that mediated through body mass index, except for
saccharose. Thus, nutrition was found to be the key factor for the fa
vourable changes in the risk profile in the population of Tallin.
