The localization of unstable drift waves on the magnetic surface of a
helically symmetric stellarator model is discussed using the balloonin
g mode formalism. The spectrum is calculated on each node of a grid on
a magnetic surface. The most unstable modes in a cold ion electrostat
ic model are found to be localized on a band in the favourable curvatu
re region.
