From the Permian Chochal Formation in Guatemala (Central America), var
ious taxa of Algae and Foraminifera are recognized. Described species
are: dasycladales Clavaporella americana, Connexia slovenica, smaller
foraminifera Neondothyra sp. and fusulinids Eoverbeekina americana, Ps
eudoreichelina discoidea, Schubertella muellerriedi, Pseudofusulinoide
s chixoyensis nov sp., Skinnerella gruperaensis, Parafusulina australi
s, P. sapperi, P. guatemalaensis, P. fountaini, P. durhami and Skinner
ina latina nov. sp. The whole Chochal Formation is Leonardian and Road
ian in age, but with several noticeable diachronisms. Palaeogeographic
ally, the Leonardian-Roadian seaway of the Guatemala extended from Tex
as to Venezuela, and the Venezuelian area of Lake Maracaibo was adjace
nt to the north of Guatemala (Maya Block). The dispersion of the fusul
inids across Panthalassa has been favoured by surface currents, plant
rafts and carbonate platforms on guyots and suspect terranes.
