Abstract
Undergraduate medical education in Manchester is undergoing wholesale revision, with the introduction of problem-based learning (PBL) in eac h successive year of the curriculum, as the cohort of students who joi ned the faculty in 1993 advances through the course, This cohort has n ow entered year 3, which is primarily hospital-based, In preparation f or this, we have explored the development of an OSCE, not only to asse ss core interpersonal skills such as history taking, clinical examinat ion, and the ability to explain things to patients, but also to integr ate the examination of important skills relating to investigational sc iences, These include the correct choice of laboratory tests, accurate interpretation of data, and appropriate selection of clinical respons es to test results.
