Abstract
The are index alpha(L) of a link L is shown by a direct combinatorial argument to be related to spr(upsilon)(F-L(upsilon, x)), the Laurent d egree of its Kauffman polynomial, by the inequality alpha(L) greater t han or equal to spr(upsilon)(F-L(upsilon, z)) + 2. Equality is conject ured for alternating links.
