The reaction of [CpIr(eta(5)-C6H5O)][BF4] (1) with PPh3 in refluxing
C2H4Cl2 afforded unexpectedly but reproducibly the known compound CpI
rCl2PPh3 (2) which was identified by H-1-NMR spectroscopy and single c
rystal X-ray diffraction. This unexpected chemical transformation to g
ive 2 involves 'C-Cl' abstraction from dichloroethane mediated by the
'CpIr' fragment. A rationale for this surprising transformation is ad
vanced. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
