Abstract
A photon backscatter technique to detect corrosion hidden beneath an o bstructing surface layer was investigated. The technique is sensitive to both composition and density changes resulting from corrosion in me tals; further, the sensitivity of some system variables to corrosion-l ike conditions affords opportunity for design optimization and corrosi on characterization. The primary application of the technology is in n on-destructive evaluation of critical structures, such as aircraft, fo r detecting hidden and inaccessible corrosion. (C) 1997 Elsevier Scien ce Ltd.
