Unidirectional, adiabatic infiltration, and solidification/remelting o
f Al-4.5 wt% Cu alloy in a porous preform is modeled numerically, The
model formulation is derived from the Fundamental conservation laws. T
he moving infiltration and remelting fronts are dealt with by the Land
au transformation. The transformed governing equations are solved nume
rically. The solute, temperature, and solid volume fraction profiles a
re presented for representative parameters, The numerical predictions
agree well with previously reported experimental measurements and with
the analytical similarity solution, It is observed that the unidirect
ional infiltration and heat transfer do display the similarity behavio
r, and the macrosegregation in the casting is strongly dependent on th
e initial preform temperature, the superheat of inlet metal-matrix, an
d the applied pressure.
