The gas-phase pyrolysis of triethylgallane, triisopropylgallane, triis
obutylgallane, tri-tert-butylgallane, and trimethylgallane have been s
tudied using infrared laser-powered homogeneous pyrolysis (IR LPHP). I
dentification of products by infrared and NMR spectroscopies confirmed
that the predominant reaction pathway is beta-hydride elimination, bu
t that the pyrolysis proceeds at a significantly lower temperature in
case of triisopropylgallane, triisobutylgallane tri-tert-butylgallne t
han that of triethylgallane. Moreover the beta-hydride elimination rou
te is not available in the pyrolysis of trimethylgallane. (C) 1997 Els
