Abstract
Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Ltd's kraft pulping operation uses a variety of softwood fibres to produce different pulp grades. Wood chips are t hickness screened prior to pulping. Disc type primary chip thickness s creens dating from 1987 had become a maintenance and operational probl em. They were replaced in April 1995 with Rader bar type thickness scr eens. Initial performance problems have been overcome and che new scre ens now meet guaranteed performance criteria at their rated capacity. Future efforts will be focused on maintaining the efficiency of the sc reens and optimizing the operation of the surrounding equipment in the chip screen area of the mill.
