Smectic phases are obtained by self-organization of proton accepters a
nd donors which fulfil the two conditions: a suitable pK(s)-value of t
he carboxylic acid and a molecular shape of the associate which is abl
e to form mesophases. Following this concept associates with smectic B
phases and al the first time the crystalline S-E modification were de
signed. The existence of the phases was proven by calorimetric, micros
copic and X-ray investigations.
