Dibenzoyl peroxide undergoes oxidative addition to metallic copper wit
h 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine in acetone solvent and affords the binuclear
complex [Cu-2(C6H5COO)(4)(C8H11N)(2)]. This complex has been characte
rized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopies, thermal ana
lysis and X-ray diffraction techniques. The X-ray studies show that th
e structure of the complex is monoclinic, space group, P2(1)/N, with c
ell parameters, a=10.499(4), b=10.666(6), c=18.109(3) Angstrom, beta=9
2.92(2)degrees, V=2025.2 Angstrom(3) Z=2, Dc=1.398g.cm(-3), R=0.068 an
d Rw=0.075. Each copper ion is coordinated by four bridging bidentate
benzoate ligands and one 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine to form binuclear mol
ecule.
