From a combination of FT-Raman, infrared and inelastic neutron spectro
scopies, all of the internal and librational modes of complexed water
have been assigned unambiguously. Two of the translational modes (Fe-O
stretch and Fe-O bend) have been assigned and the evidence suggests t
hat the remaining mode (an Fe-O bend) is coincident with the other ben
d. The spectra provide good evidence that the FE-OH2 twist is highly a
nharmonic and that the hydrogen bonding has a major effect on the Fe-O
dynamics. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
