Abstract
With the tight focus of a gaussian laser beam, single molecules in sol ution at room temperature can be trapped and detected by observation o f fluorescent photons. The focus defines an ultrasmall probe volume on the order of 1 femtoliter, and the electric field gradient associated with this focus enables an individual molecule to be trapped and mani pulated.
