We study the stability of shallow layers of granular materials conside
red as Bagnold fluids (the fluid with power law exponent n = 2) in two
cases: (i) inertia terms are negligible and (ii) inertia terms are im
portant. The linear analysis of the governing equations in the two cas
es demonstrates stable and unstable regimes, respectively. The evoluti
on of some finite amplitude disturbances is solved numerically. (C) 19
