Abstract
Catalysis of the oxidation reaction CO + 1/2 O-2 --> CO2 by metal clus ters is examined by gas phase ion chemistry and mass spectrometry tech niques. Small platinum cluster anions, Pt-n(-) (n = 3 - 6), are effect ive catalysts for the reaction under thermal conditions. The proposed reaction mechanism involves atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the clusters. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
