Jd. Lewis et al., SPLENIC VEIN-THROMBOSIS SECONDARY TO FOCAL PANCREATITIS DIAGNOSED BY ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASONOGRAPHY, Journal of clinical gastroenterology, 26(1), 1998, pp. 54-56
We report splenic vein thrombosis diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasonogra
phy (EUS) after thr failure of extracorporeal ultrasound and contrast
enhanced computed tomography to establish the diagnosis in a patient w
ith gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia. Subsequent preoperative magn
etic resonance imaging revealed findings of retroperitoneal fibrosis a
nd confirmed the EUS findings. Splenic vein thrombosis is a well-known
cause of gastrointestinal bleeding and splenomegaly: pancreatitis and
pancreatic tumors are its most common underlying causes. Abdominal ul
trasound and computed tomography are frequently used to diagnose splen
ic vein thrombosis. We discuss the use of EUS for diagnosis of vascula
r anomalies in the gastrointestinal tract and tile association of sple
nic vein thrombosis, retroperitoneal fibrosis, and pancreatitis.
