Abstract
We investigate, by two-step resonance ionization of cerium, an optical transition that has two isotopic components under the multi-mode lase r line. We demonstrate that the two components can be resolved by stat istical analysis of data, when, besides the ionization signal, also th e spectra of the laser pulses are recorded. The resolution and the sen sitivity of the novel statistical technique is discussed.
