Starting from an overview of experimentally identified and quantum che
mically calculated gaseous fluoride heterodimers and oligomers, it is
the intention of the authors to survey the present knowledge on struct
ures and stabilities of these complexes and to draw some consequences
for experimental chemistry. General characteristics of gaseous halogen
-bridged complexes are explained in Section 2. The present knowledge o
n experimentally identified and quantum chemically calculated fluorine
-bridged heterocomplexes is summarized in Section 3. Finally, stabilit
ies and structures of fluoroaluminate complexes in the vapour phase ar
e discussed in Section 4. The discussion is focused on fluoroaluminate
complexes containing mono-, di- and trivalent cations. (C) 1997 Elsev
