The basic results of experimental studies on reinitiation in diffracti
ng multifront detonation waves (DW) are presented for various symmetri
es and fuel-oxygen and fuel-air mixtures (including those diluted with
inert gases). Characteristic parameters are identified for each diffr
action pattern. The physical processes taking place directly in the DW
front govern reinitiation. The most important of these processes are
collisions of transverse waves which serve as a kind of microscopic in
itiators.
