A scheme for a polarized He-3(2+) ion source based on resonant charge-
exchange between polarized He-3 atoms and unpolarized He-4(2+) ions is
proposed. Polarized atoms in this scheme are produced by optical pump
ing with metastability exchange. The polarized atoms are stored then i
n a storage cell. Unpolarized He-4(2+) ions are formed in a separate u
npolarized plasma source and are injected into the charge-exchange reg
ion in which the polarized He-3(2+) ions are produced by the resonant
charge-exchange of the polarized He-3 atoms with the unpolarized He-4(
2+) ions. It is expected that the polarized He-3(2+) ion beam produced
in this scheme will have high intensity and polarization.
