Sp. Simonovic et al., PRACTICAL SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA FOR DECISION-MAKING, International journal of sustainable development and world ecology, 4(4), 1997, pp. 231-244
The new paradigm of sustainability necessitates revisions to tradition
al decision-making processes. This paper, which is the first in a seri
es of four, outlines the changes required for decision-making to refle
ct sustainability concerns. Three sustainability criteria, that are th
e focus of the three subsequent papers, are introduced and the rationa
le for each is explained. A framework for incorporating the three sust
ainability criteria into the decision-making process is briefly outlin
ed. The paper ends with the introduction to a case study, the North Ce
ntral Project (NCP) for electricity supply alternatives. The NCP is us
ed in the three following papers to demonstrate the individual compone
nts of the new approach to sustainable decision-making.
