Abstract
The microstructures and properties of deep laser melted and rapidly so lidified zones produced by a cw power laser on thick plates of AISI 30 4 stainless steel were studied. Both chemical and mechanical propertie s of the solidified regions were found to be comparable or better than those characterizing the original material, thus allowing the melting process to be used for technological purposes, in particular for weld ing.
