The detection efficiencies for the nonzero-order joint transform corre
lator (NOJTC) and the conventional joint transform correlator (CJTC) a
re evaluated. We show that the NOJTC outperforms the CJTC under both t
he noiseless and noisy conditions, due to the high diffraction efficie
ncy (DE) of the NOJTC. We also show that false alarms created by inter
target modulation can indeed be avoided using the NOJTC. (C) 1998 Soci
