A simple method of removing the zero order in a joint transform power
spectrum, i.e., using the nonzero-order joint transform power spectrum
(NOJTPS), is discussed. We show that the nonzero-order joint transfor
m correlator (NOJTC) performs better than the conventional joint trans
form correlator (CJTC). In short, the NOJTC offers high detection effi
ciency, better input pixel utilization, and avoidance of false alarms
due to multitarget intermodulation. Simulated and experimental demonst
rations are provided. (C) 1998 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentatio
