Abstract
Values of volume size factor of solid solutions have been used to pred ict lattice parameters in binary B2 (CsCl prototype) intermetallics. I n order to do so one of the two elements has to be identified as solve nt. A simple equation containing volume of solvent and volume size fac tor of solute has been derived and is used to calculate the lattice pa rameter of different B2 intermetallics. Good prediction is obtained if a transition element is identified as the solvent, the solute can be a transition or a non-transition metal. Equations derived for ternary systems, and predictions obtained using them indicate that the concept of volume size factor can also be extended to ternary systems. (C) 19 97 Elsevier Science Limited.
